BBC Music/MusicBrainz bookmarklet

with 5 comments

At BBC Audio and Music Interactive, I’m one of the software engineers working on the BBC Music Discovery team. This week we launched the BBC Music Beta, which focuses in particular on publishing information about the artists broadcast on the BBC. You can read more about the site on Tom Scott’s blog and BBC Radio Labs.

Matthew Shorter describes at the bottom of his post how to use MusicBrainz to find a given artist. Here’s a little something to make that a touch easier: a BBC Music/MusicBrainz bookmarklet!

Drag this BBC Music/MusicBrainz link to your bookmarks bar in your browser. Now, when you’re on an artist page (e.g. Coldplay) click on the bookmarklet to switch between BBC Music and MusicBrainz artist page.

Enjoy!

  3. [...] BBC Music/MusicBrainz bookmarklet [metade.org] Makes navigating the new BBC artist pages easier - a bookmarklet that flips between MusicBrainz and bbc/music. « The all new BBC music site where programmes meet music and the semantic web [...]

  4. The “artist” pages are looking great - a lot of added value information for casual browsing whilst listening to shows. MusicBrainz seems to offer some very rich data - discogs of course, but also related artists. Wasn’t aware. Although a comment on Matther Shorter’s post suggests that the related artists come from Last.fm.

    Great work, I look forward to seeing it launch. The next step is a really nice, navigable user interface to allow quick, fun browsing of artist info while listening to a particular show (not that this interface isn’t nice! I just mean minimal page refreshes).

    Are you considering other types of external data/links such as recent blog posts about the artist?

  5. With the help of a JavaScript tutorial I have modified the bookmarklet code given above to make a bookmarklet that switches between the iPlayer page for a programme and its /programmes page:

    javascript:var m=/http:\/\/(www.)?(bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode|bbc.co.uk\/programmes)\/([0-9a-z]{8})/.exec(location.href);if(m[2]==’bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode’){location.href=’http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/’+m[3];} if(m[2]==’bbc.co.uk/programmes’){location.href=’http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/’+m[3]+’/';}

    It seems to work pretty well, but as I’m not very familiar with JS and regular expressions its possible that there might be a mistake somewhere in there. Anyway, I hope people find it useful!
